Name: Yang Xiao Long
Canon: RWBY
Canon Point: Between episodes 6 and 7 of volume 6 (escaping Brunswick Farm and arriving at Argus)
Age: 19
Backstory: Have a wiki link! The relevant sections are everything up to the end of “Nightmare of Brunswick Farms”.
Personality:
By her own admission, Yang is a thrill-seeker who wants a life of adventure and uncertainty, never knowing what the next day will bring. Initially, she only really desired to be a Huntress because it was the job that most aligned with those desires, though she realized that sort of driftless mentality wasn’t sustainable in the long term. Underneath the surface however, Yang shows great emotional intuitiveness, being able to pick up on small cues from others and assess their feelings. This is most evident with Ruby, her younger sister, and Blake, Yang’s partner with whom she shares a deep and intense bond.
Ruby remains Yang’s strongest motivation, as her devotion to her younger sister and team leader is absolute. Yang had to step into the role of a quasi-parental figure for Ruby, as Summer’s disappearance caused their father Taiyang to emotionally detach from his children for a time and throw himself into his work. This is worth noting that Yang was all of five or six when this happened, as it means she made the decision to give up a significant portion of her childhood to care for her younger sister while still a pre-schooler herself. On a wider level, though shaken by the revelations of Salem’s existence and Jinn spilling the beans that the witch cannot be killed, Yang remains dedicated to opposing her and her plans to end the world, and since the Fall of Beacon and being challenged to re-examine her goals, places a much greater emphasis on protecting people than she initially did.
Right now, the biggest fear Yang has is that of Adam Taurus, something Blake has pointed out to her is something of his specialty. Despite having retrained with Taiyang and learned to use her Semblance more effectively and not as a crutch to win fights, Yang has not yet fully psychologically recovered from her maiming at his hands, and still experiences periodic nightmares, and flashes of Adam, as well as a shaking in her hands after a fight. She regrets falling for Mercury’s trick during the Vytal Festival, even though she had no way of knowing what he was planning, and oldest of all, she regrets the ill-fated expedition to find her mother Raven as a child, that almost resulted in her and Ruby’s deaths. This incident in particular was the impetus for Yang to put her quest to find Raven on the backburner, to not let it dictate her life or risk putting others in danger, a lesson she strove to impart to Blake when her obsession with tracking down Roman Torchwick began to have an adverse effect on her life. This also shows that Yang learns from her regrets, and she will later assert to a vision of her earlier self that her failures more than anything have made her who she is, and she would not trade them for anything.
Yang’s biggest triggers revolve around trust and abandonment. After being disqualified from the Vytal Festival, it was Blake’s momentary hesitance in believing Yang’s story that Mercury had tried to sneak attack her that caused Yang the most visible distress, almost breaking out in tears before Blake chose to believe Yang was telling the truth (and this was wrapped up in Blake’s own trauma regarding her relationship with Adam and how he would gaslight her). Furthermore, when Blake abandoned the team following the Fall of Beacon, Yang carried a great deal of resentment for her partner “abandoning” them, surprising Ruby and Weiss. However, this was a cover for her sorrow at not having Blake around when Yang needed her and when Blake returned during the Battle of Haven, Yang was able to quickly let go of that resentment and welcomed her back.
Furthermore, the loss of her arm sent her into a depressive episode that lasted several months as she convalesced at the family home on Patch, though she began to break through it when she realized that she was preventing Taiyang from looking for Ruby because he needed to care for her. Realizing she was holding others back led Yang to begin to pull herself out of her depression and start to get back to her new normal, eventually departing Patch to find Ruby herself.
She also has a great deal of resentment tied up in her complete and utter disappointment with Raven, though Yang keeps a tight lid on her emotions when dealing with her mother and refuses to let Raven get under her skin, though she is not completely successful.
Initially, being a Huntress was simply a means to an end for Yang, being the career that most aligned with the kind of adventurous life she wanted to live. As such, she prioritized the thrill of fighting Grimm and dangerous situations over a Huntress’ true responsibility of protecting people from them. Being challenged by one of her professors to re-examine her goals and motivations, coupled with the knowledge of the secret war against Salem and her attempts to keep humanity divided before the Day of Reckoning, have made Yang internalize the value of protecting people over the cheap thrills of combat (though she still does enjoy a good fight). This will eventually lead to her and Ruby parting ways in Atlas, when Ruby prioritizes using the communications tower at Amity Coliseum to warn the world about Salem and her imminent attack on Atlas, while Yang would rather focus on saving the people of Mantle being threatened by Grimm at that moment. While it is never in serious danger of breaking their relationship, it is notable for being the first time Yang and her sister are not on the same page, which is a far cry from when she entered Beacon.
Her initial response to the trauma of the Fall of Beacon was to withdraw int
At first, Yang will appreciate the changes, finding them useful and even cool. It’s not until she realizes the effect that actually turning into a monster will have on her that she will realize the danger they’re all in, and to combat the trauma of possibly losing herself she will redouble her focus on protecting the Convoy. Whatever doubts she has about Nirvana (and she has so many doubts), Yang will keep herself grounded and human by focusing on her core values as a Huntress to defend people from actual monsters. She will also rely more heavily on her friends (either from a RWBY cast or cross-canon CR she develops in-game) to keep her grounded and herself, resisting the monstrous urges that will begin to plague her.
To sum up, be gay, drive cars, try not to awoo.
Powers/Abilities: As a human from Remnant, Yang has two special powers.
Aura: The manifestation of Yang’s soul, her Aura both powers her Semblance, and can act as a protective full-body shield that protects Yang from harm. Aura degrades with use, either via combat or over time, creating a shattering effect over Yang’s body that symbolizes when it breaks. While her Aura will build back up over time, restful periods ensure the fastest regrowth. Aura can even protect from harmful weather conditions like heat or cold, though this will cause her Aura to be worn down the longer Yang is exposed to those elements. Yang’s aura also extends to her prosthetic arm as well.
Semblance: A unique ability that is an expression of her Aura/soul, Yang has the Semblance of Burn, which allows her to absorb kinetic energy from every blow she takes and use it to power her own strikes and attacks. Yang can choose whether to spend the energy over multiple strikes or save it for a single bit hit, and the Semblance is only usable so long as she has active Aura still in the tank.
Following training with her father, Yang is relying on her Semblance less to win fights, by fighting smarter and more tactically than she did during her time at Beacon where she relied almost entirely on her Semblance to achieve victory.
Inventory:
Ember Celica: Yang’s custom weapon of her own design, Ember Celica is a gauntlet mounted on her left arm that can retract into a more inconspicuous-looking bracelet when not in use. It serves primarily to enhance her punches with explosive blasts with the shotgun shells she loads into it. The recoil is also strong enough that Yang can use it to propel herself short distances, or even into the air if she shoots the ground, which she can use to zip around a battlefield more quickly, or line up big finishing strikes. Originally a pair, Yang lost the right hand gauntlet with her arm during the Battle of Beacon. However...
Prosthetic Arm: Developed by Atlas cybernetics expert Pietro Pollendina at the behest of General Ironwood, the arm was delivered to Yang as she recuperated at home following the fall of Beacon, taking the place of her right-hand Ember Celica gauntlet. In addition to providing Yang with a full range of motion, the arm is also very strong, able to send her father Taiyang skidding backwards several feet when he blocked a blow from it. It also mounts a shotgun inside it that allows it to function like Ember Celica. Yang can also fire the arm from her bicep with great force, as Nora Valkyrie discovered during an arm-wrestling match, and is strong enough to block sword-blows on its own, though at the very least the arm’s outer shell will be damaged.
Game Plans:
Yang is highly skeptical about this whole Nirvana business (though her current hang-ups with Ozpin are also colouring this distrust), but having no better alternatives will accompany the convoy and the rest of her team to keep them safe. Obviously, playing out a Bumbleby scenario with Blake is a big pull as well, with the added twist of them both undergoing monster transformations. In the Convoy, Yang will volunteer to use her car as a scout to ride ahead when necessary to identify potential threats or dangers. During downtime however, I also see her getting work as a Convoy mechanic, helping to repair and maintain everyone’s vehicles since Yang is a skilled mechanic and engineer.
As for specific player/CR hooks, she also agreed to help Jayce look for more runes out of a belief that they might be able to send them all home if they can decode the language of the Arcane, and is generally interested in finding out more about magic in general; it’s something she only recently learned was real on Remnant, and she’s curious to know more about what it can do.
Monster Choice: Number 1 is Zoanthrope, because Werewolf Yang as a concept is just too good to pass up, especially if Blake gets to be a Vampire.
Failing that, #2 would be Drakonis, and turn Yang into a Dragon, as befitting the meaning of her name, Sunny Little Dragon.
If all else fails, #3 would be Elemental, and have her become a Fire Genasi since she is heavily associated with fire and burning in general.
Vehicle Choice: A 1972 Dodge Charger, based on this specific model here in yellow and black. Its starting attribute will be Speed, though in time I could see Yang going for more upgrades.
